[Volunteer opportunity] Research, business, & product fellowships at HomeCycle (a Jumanji Startup) — rethinking how we own, use and keep home appliances
About Jumanji
Jumanji builds radical and optimistic steward-owned businesses, and we're looking for talented fellows to support our partners.
We are a "Startup Studio" founded by experienced impact entrepreneurs and investors, and we now like to say we build stay'ups rather than startups, because we build them to last, not to sell them to the highest bidder once they show promise. That's what "Steward Ownership" means.
Our purpose is to invent lifestyles that are compatible with planetary boundaries, but also convivial and happy. We currently work with 5 impact businesses, and each year we seek to launch 1 to 2 new ones.
Here are a few examples:HomeCycle (www.homecycle.fr): making the household appliances industry truly circular through product-as-as-service models.
GaiaConnect (www.gaiaconnect.co): a community that supports impact makers and impact seekers, through mentorship and collective support.
Capsule Club (www.capsuleclub.fr): pioneers experiential learning around low tech and frugal innovation. What is a Fellowship at Jumanji? The Jumanji Fellowship is an opportunity we have specifically designed for driven, eco-conscious individuals starting out their career, designing their new career path towards more impact, or who want to contribute to social entrepreneurship but do not know in what way. The Fellowship experience will allow you to discover our collective entrepreneurship model, to immerse yourself in the world of impact (circular economy, product as a service, degrowth, regeneration, community building) but also to participate in the rapid development of young businesses lead by experienced and truly committed entrepreneurs. We welcome up to 20 new Fellows each year, go meet our fellows on our website In the past, Fellows have helped us : frame our regenerative playbook, test and launch new ideas and projects, run prospective work, code some things we wanted to try... and three have even become co-founders (although this is never the intent at first). What will be the main mission for this Fellowship? HomeCycle is a product-as-a-service company for large household appliances: our customers use their washing machine, dishwasher or fridge rather than own it. For this to make economic and environmental sense, appliances must live much longer than the industry average, which depends on :
• How people use and maintain them
• How we model and prove the benefit
• And on the tools we build around the appliance and the customer Several of these questions are genuinely unmapped, and that’s what these fellowships are for. Depending on the topic, the fellow will work closely with either Laurent Balagué (CPO), who leads all R&D initiatives at HomeCycle or with Stéphane Prudhomme (CEO), with the support of all the teams as well as the involvement of Valérian Fauvel (Jumanji founder, HomeCycle chairman). Together you and us will pick and design one track, shaped around your background and interests:
• Appliance behaviour & lifespan (social science / behavioural / data) — why people use, maintain and replace their appliances the way they do, and which drivers most predict good or damaging habits.
• Ownership versus access (sociology / behavioural) — what drives attachment to owning versus a logic of use, and how it plays out for household appliances specifically.
• Linear vs product-as-a-service calculator (modelling / economics / environment / product) — a rigorous economic and environmental model comparing buying vs using, from the consumer’s and the planet’s point of view, turned into a tool anyone can use.
• An AI companion for appliance care (product / AI / UX) — a preventive, everyday assistant that helps users catch small issues and keep appliances alive, complementing (not competing with) our repair partners.
The circuit-breaker (engineering, experimental) — exploring and prototyping how a PaaS operator can act on a rented appliance responsibly, where the technical, legal and reputational questions are inseparable.
• Local authorities & social housing partnerships (business development ) — shape HomeCycle’s value proposition for local authorities and social landlords: interviews, market research and commercial strategy, through to a pilot and first prospecting.
Partnerships (business development) — build the partnership strategy behind our referral and customer-incentive programme: identifying first partners, shaping the approach, and leading early negotiations. Our goal with these fellowships is to make genuine progress on questions the sector has barely addressed — not to “solve” them in a few months, but to lay rigorous foundations and give the field sharper evidence and better tools. We care more about honest, well-grounded work than fast, polished deliverables. If you join the fellowship, you will have advanced real understanding (or built a real tool) on a problem that matters for the circular economy, produced a deliverable that stands on its own merit, and helped a young company change how an entire category is consumed. Each track’s challenge to crack is entirely defined with you and adapted to your learning objectives. Who are we looking for? You need to come with sheer optimism, a positive energy, a persevering courage, and an open mindset. We want to collaborate with people who have a real ambition for the planet. If you see yourself as dedicating all your skills for a positive change, then we’ll show you it’s possible. We look for curious, rigorous and autonomous people who are drawn to hard, open problems and sceptical of easy answers — whatever the discipline. What matters most is the depth of your curiosity and your ability to drive a complex subject with limited supervision. If one of these tracks genuinely excites you, tell us which, and why. You don't need to speak French and you’ll always be your own boss Unpaid opportunity: fellowships only work if it's a win-win learning opportunity for you and us. There is no stipend, we need to be upfront about this. Start date: flexible, whatever suits you Flexible hours: It can be full or part time; sometimes a few hours a week for long enough do the job, and we schedule regular updates with one of the Jumanji Partner or Stay'up CEO to guide your project. Time commitment : we expect you to be around for at least 2 months otherwise it's hard to accomplish something meaningful. Some fellowship can last a year.
