About the role
Ashi Studio, a renowned haute couture house based in Paris, is seeking an experienced Leather Specialist to join its atelier. The role covers the full construction of couture pieces in leather, suede and specialty skins — from skin selection and cutting through to assembly, finishing and client fittings.
Key responsibilities
• Select, grade and cut skins for couture pieces — working around natural defects, matching grain, shade and nap across panels.
• Calculate skin quantities and advise on sourcing.
• Translate the modéliste’s toile into leather, accounting for stretch, memory and the fact that leather does not forgive a second stitch line.
• Skive and prepare edges; bond, glue and reinforce as the construction requires.
• Machine and hand stitching on leather, including saddle stitch and topstitching.
• Work in suede and nubuck with correct nap direction throughout the garment.
• Execute perforation, laser-cut detail, appliqué, patchwork and marquetry where the design calls for it.
• Finish edges, hems and linings to couture standard.
• Carry out fittings, adjustments and repairs on finished leather pieces.
• Handle, condition and store skins correctly. Qualifications
• Minimum 10 years working leather in a haute couture, luxury fashion or high-end leather atelier.
• Proven experience constructing leather and suede garments — not accessories only.
• Expert skin selection: grading, defect management, shade and grain matching.
• Skilled in skiving, bonding and leather-specific machines (walking foot, post-bed, roller foot), with correct needle and thread selection.
• Comfortable in fine skins: agneau plongé, nappa, veau velours, chèvre velours, and exotics.
• Strong hand skills, including saddle stitch and hand finishing.
• Understanding of how leather behaves under tension, over time, and on the body.
• Fluency in English or French. French is not required.
