2H Offshore is a global engineering contractor specialising in the design, engineering and integrity management of offshore structures, topsides facilities, subsea components and riser and conductor systems for the offshore renewables and oil and gas sectors. Both market sectors require similar engineering skill sets, and our breadth of experience in offshore structures and environments allows us to provide expertise at all stages of a project: feasibility and concept design, detailed design, procurement management, fabrication support, installation support, monitoring, integrity management, asset life extension and decommissioning.
2H Offshore are seeking an Engineering Intern on a full time, 6 month fixed term contract basis. Based at our facility in Paris, we are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated Engineering Student with an aptitude for analytical work for its development within the Oil & Energy Sector.
As offshore developments continue to move into increasingly challenging environments, future floating production facilities are expected to operate in water depths approaching 3000 m. At such depths, conventional riser concepts can face significant technical challenges related to structural performance, fatigue life, installation feasibility, and project cost.
Steel Lazy Wave Risers (SLWRs) are among the most promising riser concepts for ultra deepwater applications due to their ability to decouple vessel motions from the seabed-touchdown region, thereby reducing fatigue loading and improving overall system performance.
This internship aims to investigate and optimise SLWR configurations for ultra-deepwater applications, with a particular focus on water depths of up to 3000 m. The intern will contribute to the development of practical analysis approaches and design recommendations for future offshore riser systems.
The project will combine engineering judgement, numerical modelling, and industry-standard offshore analysis tools to investigate the behaviour of SLWR systems and identify practical and efficient configurations.
Main activities will include:
• Review current deepwater and ultra deepwater SLWR applications and design methodologies.
• Develop representative environmental and metocean conditions for ultra deepwater developments.
• Develop numerical models using Orcaflex software.
• Conduct sensitivity studies to identify the main drivers governing SLWR performance.
• Compare alternative ultra deepwater riser concepts and establish design recommendations.
• Investigate potential optimisation opportunities to improve performance and reduce project costs. Investigate the impact of key configuration parameters, including:
• Acceptable pipe size and wall thickness.
• Buoyancy module configuration.
• Wave section geometry.
• Hang-off arrangement.
• Water depth effects. Perform static and dynamic analyses to assess:
• Effective tension.
• Curvature and Minimum Bend Radius (MBR).
• Vessel offset sensitivity.
• Touchdown zone behaviour.
• Fatigue-sensitive locations. The outcome of the project will be a set of engineering recommendations and design guidelines for ultradeep water SLWR systems, providing valuable insight into the technologies that may enable the next generation of offshore energy developments. The successful candidate will participate in engineering activities involving offshore riser design, structural mechanics, and dynamic analysis. The role will involve:
• Development of numerical models for SLWR.
• Static and dynamic analysis of riser configurations.
• Processing and interpretation of simulation results.
• Development of engineering tools and automated workflows.
• Communication of technical findings through reports and presentations.
• Collaboration with experienced offshore engineers on real engineering challenges.
• Training will be provided throughout the process as required. 2H uses several software packages, ranging from specialist offshore engineering tools such as OrcaFlex and OrcaWave to general-purpose engineering and programming tools. Required
• Master's degree in Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Aptitude and enthusiasm for analytical work.
• Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
• Interest in offshore renewable energy and oil and gas developments.
• Good communication and presentation skills.
• Fluent in French and English.
• Desire to take ownership of technical tasks.
• Knowledge of structural mechanics and dynamics.
• Experience with Microsoft Office.
• Experience with Python programming is desirable.
• Familiarity with engineering software packages such as OrcaFlex, OrcaWave, DeepLines, Flexcom or similar tools would be advantageous.
