About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and strategically minded BESS Maintenance Manager to lead and develop the O&M function within our fast-growing Operations and Maintenance department. Reporting to the O&M Director, you will be responsible for overseeing all maintenance activities delivered by our field engineering teams across a growing portfolio of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in the UK. This is a critical leadership role that combines operational excellence, team management, and strategic development to ensure our assets perform at their maximum potential. You will ensure that our engineering teams deliver fully in line with contractual arrangements, working collaboratively with clients and their representatives to build trusted, long-term partnerships. The role will work extensively with other stakeholders within the BESS team, including MEP, Development, and Construction, to ensure that any factors impacting the effective operation of our BESS assets are understood and proactively managed. Regular site visits will be required. Strategic Leadership & Asset Management
• Develop and continuously improve the O&M function to fulfil our asset management objectives as our portfolio of BESS assets grows, ensuring effective and efficient delivery of all works.
• Take ownership of operational and technical escalations, ensuring they are managed in line with regulatory, contractual, and commercial obligations.
• Compile and submit monthly availability reports, analysing performance data to identify areas for improvement and further optimisation of system efficiency.
• Lead troubleshooting efforts for complex operational issues, working collaboratively with the O&M service team and technical partners to identify root causes and implement lasting solutions.
• Provide strategic input to the in-house system engineering group on product development and project work, translating field insights into tangible product improvements. Operational Excellence & Maintenance Delivery
• Maintain Envision Energy Storage Systems to the highest standards by overseeing all planned preventative maintenance (PPM) checks, annual capacity tests, and reactive works.
• Ensure all O&M activities are delivered safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with contractual requirements and industry best practices.
• Assist with phone support and remote diagnostics to customers, providing technical guidance and ensuring prompt resolution of issues.
• Support the project team with start-up and commissioning services at customer locations (SAT), ensuring seamless handover to operations.
• Provide suggestions based on field engineers' experiences to continuously improve products, procedures, and maintenance strategies. Health, Safety & Compliance
• Champion and enforce a culture of HSE excellence across both your own team and the wider company, ensuring all activities are conducted in a safe manner.
• Ensure full compliance with RAMS, SHEQ, CDM regulations, and all applicable health & safety legislation.
• Lead by example in promoting safety, wellbeing, and environmental responsibility across all site activities. Team Leadership & Development
• Manage, supervise, and plan the workload of multiple O&M field engineers across various sites, ensuring optimal resource allocation and productivity.
• Mentor and develop team members, imparting knowledge and sharing experience to build technical capability and career progression within the team.
• Foster a collaborative, high-performance culture that promotes service excellence and continuous improvement. Stakeholder & Client Management
• Build and maintain strong relationships with BESS clients and external parties across sites, ensuring customers are delighted and future growth opportunities are maximised.
• Interface effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including senior management, contractors, and regulatory bodies.
• Prepare and present reports to the senior management team, communicating performance insights and recommending strategic actions.
• Perform any other duties as required to support the growth and success of the O&M department. What We're Looking For Essential (Must-Have):
• 8+ years of experience in asset management, operations leadership, or maintenance management roles within energy networks, renewables, utilities, oil & gas, or similar industrial sectors.
• Degree educated in engineering or related field (or equivalent experience in utilities, oil & gas, water, or power generation)
• H&S knowledge and extensive experience within electrical installation projects (RAMS/SHEQ/CDM)
• H&S qualification: IOSH Managing Safely, NEBOSH Certificate, or SMSTS
• Strong knowledge of energy management best practices, energy efficiency, and renewable technologies
• Experience in asset operational data analysis and reporting, with ability to translate data into actionable insights
• Engineering and technical knowledge with awareness of operational contract constraints and understanding of business and technical risks
• Previous experience in an electrical contracting or construction environment
• Desirable knowledge of electrical works BS7671, including renewables, battery storage, EV charge points, PV installations, etc.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong problem-solving abilities
• Ability to organise and prioritise to meet deadlines
• Full UK driving licence
• Experience managing third-party service contracts and suppliers Nice to Have (Advantageous):
• Experience specifically with BESS or large-scale battery storage systems
• Familiarity with SCADA systems and remote monitoring platforms
• AP (Authorised Person) experience or certification
• Chartered status with a relevant professional body (e.g., IET, Energy Institute)
• Experience with ISO 55000 (Asset Management) standards
• Manages own workload effectively while supervising and planning team workload across multiple sites
• Positive attitude towards Health, Safety, Wellbeing, Environment and Quality Assurance (RAMS/SHEQ/CDM)
• Ability to manage multiple O&M engineers, BESS clients, and external parties simultaneously, demonstrating excellent communication and coordination skills
• Positively influences a wide range of stakeholders under budgetary and regulatory pressures
• Promotes service excellence and collaborative behaviours in the spirit of teamwork
• Proven ability to build and maintain customer/client relationships to ensure delight and identify future growth opportunities
