The Paris EU and Competition department advises organisations from the private and public sectors on both domestic and cross-border transactions and on all aspects of French and EU competition law. The team has specific expertise in regulated industries and deals with complex abuse of dominant position cases as well as sectorial regulation issues. Now part of Ashurst Perkins Coie following the firm combination, the Paris team works seamlessly with London-based economists, enabling economic analysis at the earliest stage of competition assessments. About the role
The Competition team in the Paris office is seeking an associate with three to five years' post-qualification experience in competition law, gained within an international law firm, a top-tier firm in the Paris market, or a competition authority (Autorité de la concurrence, European Commission, DG Competition). The firm is seeking a candidate holding a postgraduate law degree (Master 2 or equivalent), ideally with a specialisation in competition law, EU business law or economic law. A complementary qualification such as an LLM from a leading university will be considered a significant advantage. The associate will join a dynamic team and work under the direct supervision of the department's partners on complex, high-profile cross-border matters, spanning the full range of the department's activities: In the area of merger control, the associate will participate in the preparation and filing of notifications before the French Competition Authority (Autorité de la concurrence), the European Commission and other competition authorities worldwide. The role involves conducting competitive assessments of M&A transactions, drafting submissions and responses to authority questionnaires, and assisting in the negotiation and implementation of behavioural or structural remedies. In the area of anti-competitive practices, the associate will assist clients in connection with investigations and proceedings initiated by competition authorities, including leniency applications, settlement procedures and contentious proceedings before the relevant courts. The associate will also participate in competition compliance audits and the design and implementation of compliance programmes. In an advisory capacity, the associate will draft legal memoranda and opinions on a wide range of French and EU competition law issues, including distribution agreements, pricing practices, information exchanges between competitors, and vertical and horizontal restrictions. The candidate must demonstrate strong analytical and drafting skills in both French and English. Fluency in legal English is essential, as all matters handled by the department have a significant international dimension. The ability to work autonomously while integrating seamlessly into a multidisciplinary and multicultural team is critical, along with intellectual rigour, a keen sense of organisation and the capacity to manage multiple matters simultaneously under tight deadlines.
