The appointee is expected to contribute to the department’s core activities in research, teaching, collaboration, and, where applicable, academic leadership duties. The position involves research in geospatial information science, with a focus on the technical aspects of GIS. The appointee is expected to actively seek and obtain external research funding, publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and contribute to the development of the department’s research environment—including interdisciplinary collaborations. Teaching responsibilities include instruction at both undergraduate and master’s levels in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), with a particular emphasis on technically oriented courses such as geodatabases, Web GIS, GIS algorithms and data structures, geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI), and the acquisition and analysis of 3D geospatial data. The role includes course responsibility, course development, and participation in pedagogical development within the discipline. In terms of collaboration, the appointee is expected to engage with the surrounding society—including public authorities, industry, and other societal actors—and contribute to the application of GIS and geospatial technologies in relevant societal domains. Administrative duties may also be included, such as committee work, program development, and coordination tasks, both at departmental and faculty levels. The distribution between research, teaching, collaboration, and administrative tasks follows the faculty’s working time model: teaching typically accounts for approximately 25–35% of full-time work, with the remainder allocated to research, collaboration, and other duties. The content, distribution, and scope of responsibilities may evolve over time in response to operational development, strategic priorities, and external conditions. To support the establishment of a research group, resources equivalent to one PhD student position will be attached to this appointment. Eligibility According to the Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 4, Section 4), eligibility for appointment as Lecturer requires demonstrated pedagogical skills and either a PhD or equivalent research competence. For this position, a PhD in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), geospatial information science, geoinformatics, technical surveying (geodesy/geomatics), computer science, information systems, or a closely related field is required. A minimum of five weeks of higher education pedagogical training (or equivalent competence) is required. In exceptional cases, this requirement may be waived. Applicants lacking such training must complete it within two years of appointment.
