About VAir
Bringing lab-grade accuracy closer to the patient. VAir is developing a handheld breath analyser that identifies the main respiratory viruses (influenza A/B, SARS-CoV-2, RSV) from exhaled air in 3 minutes, directly in the GP's office or the emergency department.
The system combines a reusable reader with a single-use detection cartridge built around our patent-protected proprietary biosensors. The diagnosis is non-invasive, automated and reagent-free, with target accuracy comparable to PCR, the gold standard, but decentralised.
Our goal: help doctors and healthcare facilities triage and isolate patients better, reduce unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions and limit the spread of infections.
Founded in 2024, incubated at the Drahi-X Novation Center at École polytechnique and supported by Bpifrance, Medicen and WILCO, VAir is now designing the medical prototype that will be used in our first clinical studies next year. This is the stage where the product takes physical shape, and that is where you come in.
The Role
Your mission: turn our technology building blocks into a device that truly works. Biosensors, electronics, fluidics, mechanics, cartridge… you will help orchestrate it all, hand in hand with the CTO.
There is no shortage of integration challenges, and we look forward to discussing them with you in interview. You will bring your expertise and your perspective on the craft, while exploring neighbouring disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
• Define the system architecture of the device and cartridge with the team's microfluidics, bioengineering and design specialists, and integrate all modules.
• Design and evolve the electronics: schematics, PCBs, component selection, power, biosensor signal acquisition.
• Lead mechanical design: mechanisms, assemblies, tolerances, device–cartridge interface.
• Contribute to the industrial design and ergonomics of the device, built for everyday use by doctors.
• Prototype (3D printing, machining, development boards), test, understand what breaks and iterate.
• Build test benches and document experiments.
• Support the selection and follow-up of suppliers and subcontractors.
• Contribute to design documentation towards CE marking (design control, risk analysis). Profile and Experience
• Engineering degree, Master's or PhD in electronics, embedded systems, mechatronics, electromechanics or biomedical engineering. Your experience and achievements matter more than your degree.
• Significant experience (ideally 5+ years) designing electronic products, ideally in medtech, biotech or diagnostics.
• Strong analogue and digital electronics skills (schematic capture and PCB layout, sensors, low-level signal acquisition and processing).
• Solid foundations in mechanical and product design (CAD in SolidWorks, Fusion 360 or equivalent, tolerancing, prototyping).
• Real integration
experience:
you have already made subsystems designed by different people work together.
• A strong hands-on mindset: test fast, understand why something works or not, try again.
• Autonomy and the drive to own a topic end to end.
• Professional French and English. Nice to Have
• Experience with lab-on-chip systems or microfluidics, or familiarity with thermodynamics and bioengineering.
• Knowledge of the medical device regulatory environment (ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 60601).
• Embedded firmware experience (C/C++, Python, microcontrollers).
• Experience taking a product to industrialisation.
• Familiarity with the startup environment and its constraints.
What we offer
• A rare opportunity: You join the team as a true pillar of development, with real decision-making freedom and concrete impact on a solution set to redefine how respiratory infections are diagnosed.
• At the heart of Paris-Saclay: based on the École polytechnique campus, we work alongside the plateau's research labs and a thriving ecosystem of startups, researchers and industry players. All within easy reach of Paris by RER B and metro line 18.
• Growth prospects towards managerial responsibilities as the team expands.
• A salary of €50k–65k gross per year, depending on experience, plus BSPCE (French startup stock options) to share in VAir's success.
• Top-tier health insurance, so we take care of you while you help take care of patients.
• Navigo pass reimbursement, meal vouchers, paid leave and RTT days. Location
•
Location:
Drahi-X Novation Center, École polytechnique, 91120 Palaiseau, France
• Contract: permanent (CDI), full-time
• Work mode: on-site, remote options to be discussed
• Start date: as soon as possible
How to apply
Send at least your CV to careers@vair.dev, along with anything that showcases your talent. In particular, tell us:
• why VAir appeals to you;
• what you have designed or built, including what didn't work and what you learned from it. CAD, photos, videos, schematics, GitHub repositories, side projects: anything that shows what you can do is welcome. VAir is committed to diversity and equal opportunities. All applications are considered without distinction.
