Descriptif du poste As our Product Specialist – Science & LCA, you will be Fairly Made's Life Cycle Assessment expert. Our challenge on LCA is not technical but methodological: we know how to build a modular calculator, and we now need someone to define precisely what it should calculate. Reporting to the Head of Product and working hand in hand with our engineering team on the LCA Engine, you will wear three hats:
• LCA Engine owner (~60%)
• Own the vision and roadmap of the LCA domain (LCA Engine, databases, eco-design, Precision Score) and get them validated with the Head of Product.
• Discover needs with clients, Customer Success and Sales, then arbitrate: standardisation vs. specific requests, new sectors vs. robustness of what already exists.
• Prioritise the dataset backlog (Textile Exchange, fibre databases, EF 4.0) and track adoption, limits and client value of the LCA module.
• Write actionable functional and methodological specs, co-build technical decisions with the tech leads and follow delivery all the way to production.
• Make the calculator truly modular: model a new product category in less than a month, integrate a new dataset in less than a week, and expose data prioritisation rules (conflicting material attributes, declared vs. primary data) as configuration rather than code.
• Scientific lead (~30%)
• Define, document and maintain our LCA reference framework (ISO 14040/44, PEF / PEFCR Apparel & Footwear, French environmental cost), so that the method in use at any given time is always known.
• Model new product categories (furniture, jewellery, eyewear): functional units, system boundaries, allocation, default data.
• Lead business QA: reference cases, test sets, review of the engine's inputs and outputs.
• Be the scientific escalation point for clients and third-party audits, and decide on transparency requests about impact factors.
• Keep a methodology changelog, explain every change to the teams concerned, and help non-experts (PMs, developers, CS, Sales) understand what the engine calculates and why.
• Methodology working groups referent (~10%)
• Represent Fairly Made in technical methodology working groups (EF 3.1 → EF 4.0 transition coalition, PEF calibration, BNITH / CEN), alongside the lead methodologists and PhDs of the sector.
• Monitor standards and databases and translate every evolution into product impact and roadmap decisions.
• Your scope: any regulatory text that changes an impact calculation rule (PEF / PEFCR, French environmental cost, LCA aspects of ESPR / Digital Product Passport). General legal monitoring, CSRD, due diligence and marketing claims remain with our Legal & Regulatory team; day-to-day client LCA projects remain with our Lead Analysts.
• Your first year
• First months: understand the LCA calculator in detail, complete the ongoing third-party audit, document the methodology framework, get a 6-month LCA roadmap validated and take full ownership of scientific topics, including the EF 4.0 coalition.
• Within 6 months: fix the major issues identified.
• Within 12 months: represent Fairly Made externally, deliver the calculator's modularity, and make business QA run autonomously.
Profil recherché
• Solid LCA expertise: several years of hands-on LCA practice (consulting, research, industry or tech), with in-depth knowledge of ISO 14040/44, PEF / PEFCR and the Environmental Footprint methodology and databases (EF 3.1, and its transition to EF 4.0). Knowledge of the French environmental cost framework is a strong plus.
• Methodological rigour: you know how to define functional units, system boundaries, allocation rules and default data, and how to document a method so it can be audited. Experience beyond textile (furniture, jewellery, eyewear…) is a plus.
• A product mindset: you enjoy turning methodology into clear specs and product decisions, prioritising a backlog, and arbitrating between scientific robustness and client value. Experience working with product and tech teams, ideally in a SaaS company, is a plus.
• Data comfort: you are at ease with datasets, taxonomies, test cases and reading a calculation engine's inputs and outputs. This is not a developer role, so no coding is required.
• Scientific credibility: you can hold your own with clients' experts, auditors and the lead methodologists and PhDs of working groups. A PhD or equivalent experience is appreciated.
• Pedagogy: you can explain complex methodological choices simply to non-experts (product, tech, Customer Success, Sales).
• Ownership and autonomy: as an individual contributor, you take full ownership of your domain and make things move.
• Languages: fluent in French and English. Benefits
