about the role

Your role is to carry out dissertation work on: "MAC/PHY optimization in next generation wireless networks for environmentally sustainable design". Environmental impact is becoming an increasingly important consideration in the evolution of mobile phone network standards. For example, the 3GPP standardisation group is currently studying energy savings and the carbon footprint of the radio access network. Orange has taken up the subject and wants to "ensure that mobile network developments, by 2030 and beyond, deliver value to society in a secure, resilient and environmentally and economically sustainable way". The aim of the thesis is to design the radio interface (technological building blocks with a system perspective) under environmental constraints (). The main obstacles and challenges to be overcome (scientific or technical) are firstly to understand the current standard (5G) (from the MAC layer to the physical layer), then to estimate the environmental cost of the technical solutions (and services) deployed (currently or in the future) and, finally, to model the end-to-end transmission chain. Thus, revisiting the standard and its associated transmission chain will make it possible to identify the blocks (and procedures) that have the greatest impact on both the MAC and physical layers. Then, modelling the environmental cost per byte transmitted according to each category of service (voice services, SMS, but also social networks and meta-verse) and prioritising them according to their environmental footprint/impact will then enable action to be taken where the greatest gains can be made, while maintaining quality data services: modelling to optimise spectral efficiency and other key performance indicators within the constraints of a given energy consumption. Innovations can then be proposed for standardisation and/or collaborative programmes. This will ultimately strengthen Orange's position in this initiative and help to limit the carbon footprint or environmental impact.

Energy-efficient design requiring a cross-disciplinary approach has already been proposed in the past. It was essentially based on approaches based on optimal resource management in terms of energy in the temporal, frequency and spatial domains. But generally, these approaches do not introduce the notion of an environmental impact budget (energy and carbon). This approach is new because, at this stage, no SoA has uncovered any significant scientific contribution using this Key Value Indicator [Hexa-X Deliverable D1.1 - 6G Vision, use cases and key societal values] to develop the PHY and MAC layers of the radio interface.
