Job Overview: Smart4Energy has been confidentially mandated to source a Managing Director for a leading energy company based in Côte d'Ivoire. This role is crucial in ensuring safe, environmentally sound, and economically viable operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic, Financial & Operational Leadership:
- Lead the company’s operations to achieve key performance indicators.
- Develop and implement strategic plans in collaboration with the Board.
- Oversee budgeting, operating plans, and overall P&L responsibility.
- Partner with project teams to transition from construction to operations.
External Relations & Government Affairs:
- Engage with key stakeholders, including government ministries, regulators, lenders, and the diplomatic community.
- Build and maintain relationships to support issue resolution and enhance the company's brand and reputation.
Technical Leadership:
- Support engineering and construction functions, manage O&M matters, and oversee technical support for operations.
- Manage mobilisation and start-up processes for new projects using third-party contractors.
Risk Management, Ethics & Compliance:
- Ensure appropriate governance, risk management, and compliance standards.
- Monitor plant activities, including technical reporting and legal disputes.
Organisation/People Leadership:
- Promote a positive workplace culture emphasising diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Develop systems and human capabilities to meet operational mandates.
- Ensure the organisation is adequately staffed and structured.
Skills & Competencies:
- Commercial acumen and effective communication.
- External relationship management and stakeholder trust-building.
- Decision making, negotiation, and dispute resolution skills.
- Planning and organising with a focus on creativity and innovation.
- People management, including recruitment, performance management, and development.
- Technical expertise in major plant equipment and systems.

Qualifications & Experience:
- Technical engineering or financial degree with significant experience in the power generation industry.
- Expertise in environmental management, budget development, contract negotiation, and contractor management.
- Proven track record of working with government departments, regulators, and lenders.
- Experience in M&A, joint ventures, and complex project management.
- Skilled in risk management and mitigation.
- Experience managing diverse teams and working with various consultants.
- Ability to travel within Côte d'Ivoire, the EU, and elsewhere in Africa.
