OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

In alignment with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and in particular SDG target 4.7, UNESCO’s Section for Global Citizenship and Peace Education (ED/PSD/GCP) is working to contribute towards an education that is of quality, inclusive and that empowers learners of all ages to assume active roles, both locally and globally, in building more peaceful and just societies. In particular, global citizenship education is receiving increased attention for the role it can play in nurturing peaceful co-existence, preventing the spread of violent and exclusionary ideologies, combating discrimination, xenophobia, intolerance and mitigating the impact of intra
- and international conflicts.

In 1964 UNESCO launched the General History of Africa to respond to the challenge of reconstructing Africa’s history and promoting a genuine and African-owned perspective of the past. It resulted in the publication of a collection of eight remarkable volumes, and three forthcoming, on the history of Africa, written by Africans, from a pan-African perspective. It is essential to ensure that these historical narratives and the process of rethinking historical narratives are translated into effective and impactful teaching and learning practices and that they catalyze and connect with the transformation of education institutions and systems at large. The aim is to advance a common identity and pride in Africa’s heritage, progress towards greater epistemic justice and an inclusive and fair future through the reappropriation and production of African history and the transformation of education. These objectives are enshrined in UNESCO’s Flagship Programme “The General History of Africa (GHA) as a catalyst for achieving Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda”.

Among its other programmes, the Section for Global Citizenship and Peace Education is leading the coordination and implementation of the education-related components of this UNESCO’s Flagship Programme, which was adopted within the context of the organization’s Operational Strategy for Priority Africa (2022-2029).

The Flagship of GHA, jointly coordinated and implemented with other relevant Sectors of UNESCO, focuses on three key strategic areas: 1) Transformation of Education through the three pillars of African identity: history, languages, and common heritage; 2) Strengthening knowledge production on the history of Africa; 3) Lifelong learning, dissemination and outreach.

Long Description

Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Education, the overall guidance of the Director of the Division for Peace and Sustainable Development, and the immediate supervision of the Chief of Section of Global Citizenship and Peace Education, the incumbent will be responsible for the coordination, implementation and monitoring of the Flagship Programme on the General History of Africa’s components related to education, with particular emphasis on mainstreaming the GHA into education systems in Africa and beyond, while contributing to the Section’s broader efforts, in particular, those focused on education for peace, human right and democracy and for addressing hate speech, given that the resources developed within the framework of the “Pedagogical Use of GHA” suggests entry-points for key themes related to global educational frameworks, notably Global Citizenship Education.

Specifically, the incumbent will be responsible for carrying out the following tasks and responsibilities:

- Contribute to the overall coordination of the FP GHA, including, but not limited to, organizing regular meetings with the GHA Intersectoral Group, drafting project documents and materials, developing strategies and work plans, backstopping and monitoring the various initiatives included in the work plans, report drafting, archiving, etc.
- Contribute to the revision, finalization, publication, dissemination and implementation of GHA pedagogical materials, comprised of curriculum outlines and teachers' guides, while establishing regular exchanges with experts and GHA focal points throughout the process.
- Ensure the content development, reviewrevision, production and publication process for communication and advocacy materials of the General History of Africa, such as brochures, PowerPoints, website articles, press release, social media posts, multimedia materials.
