The British Embassy is part of a worldwide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas.
We are currently looking for a **Foreign Policy Officer** for the British Embassy in Paris to provide detailed understanding and analysis of France's foreign policy actions and approach particularly, and influencing those approaches to support the delivery of UK objectives.
- You will be working at the heart of the British Embassy in Paris to build UK-France cooperation on foreign policy. France is one of the UK’s closest international partners, and the foreign policy team works with our partners in the French government and civil society to build a common approach across the broad scope of international issues from Russia and China to preventing sexual violence in conflict and arms control. Working in the Foreign Policy Team in one of the UK’s busiest bilateral Embassies, you will have outstanding exposure to the full breadth of the UK’s and France’s strategic priorities, working closely with French colleagues from the Quai d’Orsay and Elysée, as well as with London and other Embassies and Missions.
- You will be expected to understand, influence and provide strategic advice across a wide range of complex policy areas.
- You will build and deliver a programme of strategic engagement for the foreign policy team and reinforce our cooperation with the Paris based foreign policy think tank community. You will identify opportunities for public diplomacy and strategic communications that project the UK’s foreign policy priorities and our partnership with France. You will have a thematic focus on working with France around the world to promote respect for human rights and the values of freedom and democracy, including how we can protect and promote the rules based international system.
- Geographically, you will focus on France’s relationships with the Americas. You will also lead on the Embassy’s foreign policy engagement with the Principality of Monaco.
- You will need to quickly develop a broad range of contacts across the French system to understand and influence France’s policies.
- You will use these broad contacts to produce timely, accurate reporting and respond to lobbying requests as necessary, working with a significant amount of autonomy. You will also need to think strategically, being able to assess where French policy is going and what are the drivers behind it.
- You will work closely with colleagues across the British Embassy Paris, and will need to quickly build strong relationships with colleagues across the British Government, in particular in the FCDO, MOD, Cabinet Office and with our global network of Embassies and posts - working effectively with others will be a priority for this job. Given the often pressurised and fast nature of developments in, you will also need to demonstrate you can work well at pace and have a organised, efficient approach to delivery.
- France is an active and activist global diplomatic player, especially under President Macron, and one of the UK’s closest international partners. While the bilateral relationship remains challenging in places, foreign policy is an area where UK and French interests closely align.
- Your longer term objective is to use your understanding of France’s interests and your senior network of contacts across its system to contribute to the wider UK-France relationship, ensuring Paris continues to appreciate the UK’s unique value and global role. You will be expected to be fluent in both English and French.
Essential qualifications, skills and experience
- Excellent communication skills influencing stakeholders and contacts from all levels to develop and maintain a network of FR and UK contacts.
- Ability to build and maintain strategic relationships
- Excellent English and French min C1* and ability to produce drafts, reports and analysis in both languages ;
- Strong organisational and time management skills - ability to manage competing priorities;
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- Experience of working on and dealing with foreign policy issues.
- Experience working in an international environment.
