The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is a global non-profit organization dedicated to research and development aimed at addressing water-related challenges in developing nations. With its headquarters in Colombo, Sri Lanka, IWMI operates as a CGIAR research center, maintaining a presence in 15 countries and collaborating with a vast network of researchers across approximately 56 nations.
The appointed consultant will deliver specialized guidance to formulate a strategic approach for the commercialization and licensing of IWMI's intellectual assets, ensuring alignment with CGIAR Intellectual Asset Management Principles.
This role necessitates a thorough evaluation of IWMI's intellectual property (IP) and intellectual assets (IA) portfolio, alongside the CGIAR's management principles. The consultant will conduct Key Informant Interviews with various stakeholders, including the CGIAR IP commercialization unit, CGIAR IP office, IWMI researchers, and the legal office.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
In-depth Analysis of IWMI's IP/IA Portfolio:
Conduct a comprehensive review and classification of diverse intellectual assets/IP in relation to IWMI's research outputs and their current status (active, abandoned, in development, or requiring enhancements). Compile a list of products/tools possessing IP value and pinpoint suitable IP/IA for commercialization.Market Evaluation and IP/IA Valuation:
Assess the market landscape for each IP/IA and identify potential partners or licensees. Perform a valuation to ascertain the market worth of each category of IP/IA.Legal and Regulatory Compliance Advisory:
Offer insights on contractual matters to protect IWMI's interests in the commercialization of IP/IA.Development of a Commercialization Strategy:
Taking into account IWMI's non-profit status and the compliance requirements set forth by CGIAR IA management principles, devise a detailed roadmap for commercialization. Explore various commercialization methods, including IP applications, licensing agreements, creative commons licensing, joint development, and spin-offs. Identify potential risks and challenges associated with the commercialization process and propose strategies to mitigate these risks.Capacity Building Initiatives:
Facilitate two training sessions for IWMI staff focused on the commercialization of IP/IA while adhering to CGIAR requirements.Reporting Obligations:
Provide separate reports on the tasks outlined above, culminating in a final report that summarizes the findings of the IP/IA assessment, along with recommendations for commercialization and an implementation plan.Requirements:
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Advanced degree in Law, complemented by qualifications or experience in Intellectual Property Law, commercialization, or licensing.KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:

Relevant experience in collaboration with non-profit organizations or academic institutions. Strong understanding of IP/IA valuation, contractual aspects of IP/IA sharing, licensing, and data sharing.Desirable:
