The role of the consultant involves providing expert guidance to formulate a strategic approach for IWMI's commercialization and licensing of its Intellectual Assets, ensuring alignment with CGIAR Intellectual Asset Management Principles.
This position necessitates a thorough examination of IWMI's Intellectual Property (IP) and Intellectual Assets (IA) portfolio, alongside the CGIAR's IA Management Principles. The consultant will conduct Key Informant Interviews with the CGIAR IP commercialization unit, CGIAR IP office, IWMI researchers, relevant personnel, and the IWMI legal team.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
In-depth Analysis of IWMI's IP/IA Portfolio:
Evaluate and categorize various intellectual assets/IP in relation to IWMI's research outputs and their current status (active, abandoned post-project, in development, requiring enhancements, etc.). Compile a comprehensive list of products/tools with IP value and pinpoint suitable IP/IA for commercialization.Market Assessment and Valuation of IA/IP:
Investigate the market landscape for each IP/IA and identify potential partners or licensees. Conduct valuations to ascertain the market worth of each category of IP/IA.Legal and Regulatory Compliance Advisory:
Offer insights on contractual matters to protect IWMI's interests in the commercialization of IP/IA.Development of a Commercialization Strategy:
Given IWMI's non-profit status and the compliance requirements of CGIAR IA management principles, create a detailed roadmap for commercialization. Explore various commercialization methods, including IP applications, licensing agreements, appropriate creative commons licensing, joint development, and spin-offs. Identify potential risks and challenges associated with the commercialization process and propose strategies to mitigate these risks.Capacity Building Initiatives:
Facilitate two training sessions for IWMI staff on the commercialization of IP/IA in accordance with CGIAR standards.Reporting Obligations:
Provide separate reports on the aforementioned tasks and a final summary report detailing the findings of the IP/IA assessment, along with recommendations for commercialization and an implementation plan.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

A degree or advanced degree in Law, complemented by qualifications or experience in Intellectual Property Law, commercialization, or licensing.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:

Relevant experience in collaboration with non-profit organizations and/or academic institutions. Strong understanding of IP/IA valuation, contractual aspects of IP/IA sharing, licensing, and data sharing.Desirable:
