Job Title: PhD Thesis Student

Job Description:

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled PhD student to join our international team of scientists at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). The successful candidate will be part of a collaborative project with Johnson Matthey and Technische Universität Berlin, focusing on the holistic evaluation of oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction state-of-the-art materials in high-performance electrochemical devices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct systematic investigations of transient stability of state-of-the-art catalyst materials using high-energy X-rays on ID31.
  • Determine the underlying principles leading to catalyst degradation and identify future R&D directions for hydrogen production and fuel cell technologies.
  • Collaborate with international experts from academia and industry to advance science and address societal challenges.
  • Develop new generation of materials used as catalysts in hydrogen fuel cells and water electrolyzers.

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in chemistry, physics, materials science, or a closely related field.
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF).
  • Proficient technical skills and genuine enthusiasm for experimental science.
  • Experience with electrochemistry and electrochemical energy conversion and storage is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of X-ray diffraction and programming (Python) is an asset.
  • Candidates must satisfy eligibility criteria according to the Technische Universität Berlin requirements for PhD enrolment.
