The AXA Group headquarters (GIE AXA) consolidates our corporate functions, providing guidance and support to our global subsidiaries. This ensures the effective coordination and oversight of the Group's international strategy, adherence to standards, consistency in commercial practices, and the sharing of best practices. Within the Group, you will become a part of the Group Underwriting Office department.

The newly established Global Chief Underwriting Office is responsible for driving profitability and growth through strategic product underwriting, portfolio design, and technical underwriting excellence in collaboration with AXA entities across both Commercial and Retail sectors. This is achieved through:
  • Portfolio Design Oversight
  • Underwriting Product Strategy and Profitability Assessment
  • Technical Underwriting Guidance
  • Pricing Models, Platforms, and Analytics
  • Risk Appetite Implementation
  • Ceded Reinsurance Strategy Development and Procurement
As part of this department, you will join the P&C Retail Underwriting team.

Your Job and Daily Responsibilities:

JOB PURPOSE

The primary objective of the P&C Retail Unit is to promote Technical Excellence across global entities, aiding them in achieving growth and profitability. The Senior Retail Enablement role is essential for facilitating the GUO's mandate by establishing the necessary frameworks to ensure the success of the entities. This unit will be responsible for:
  • Developing, maintaining, and refining all Governance and Control processes, including Referrals, Application Letters, Exceptions, GUL, LTA, ARCC, and Breaches. The unit will also be tasked with updating the Retail GUG as required.
  • Identifying specific projects to address emerging needs from the entities, creating toolkits, methodologies, and centers of expertise.
  • Exploring innovative approaches to business, leveraging both internal and external resources and technologies.
  • Maintaining a continuous market perspective through active participation in conferences and proactive engagement with startups in the insurance sector.
  • Utilizing data and AI competencies to address emerging underwriting challenges.
  • Developing training programs for entities aimed at enhancing technical underwriting standards.

Main Figures:
  • 20+ countries/entities and 3 regional hubs (EM, AMIH, and AMO).
  • €49bn in revenue under management (49% of total AXA Group revenue).
  • €17bn in revenue from P&C Retail & Partnerships.
  • €32bn in revenue from P&C Commercial & Partnerships.
  • 70+ requests for non-authorized underwriting business annually, representing GWP of approximately €2bn.
CONTEXT AND MAJOR CHALLENGES

The P&C Retail business is a crucial component of the Group, contributing significantly to Underlying Earnings (>33% of total) and serving over 20 million customers. Each market in which AXA operates presents unique dynamics, regulations, and challenges; however, the fundamental requirements for retail business remain consistent, primarily encompassing motor, home, and travel insurance.

Currently, motor insurance is the cornerstone product of the industry. In the medium term, with potential commoditization and technological advancements (e.g., electric vehicles, autonomous driving), the private motor market is expected to shrink and possibly become less profitable.

Furthermore, customer experience remains overly complicated, and P&C insurers face challenges in establishing long-term, meaningful relationships with clients due to low interaction frequency, lack of differentiation, increasing commoditization, and rising price pressures. Consequently, a significant portion of the P&C Retail business is at a strategic crossroads, influenced by evolving supply and demand trends that necessitate the integration of existing value chains to address specific customer needs, leading to the emergence of ecosystems.

Additionally, external challenges such as claims inflation, climate change, and shifts in customer behavior are impacting the profitability of this business segment.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Governance and Control:
    • Manage referrals (GUL, exceptions, LTA, sustainability, etc.) and coordinate with all stakeholders involved in the referral process.
  • Capability Building:
    • Promote best practices in underwriting through appropriate training courses tailored to identified knowledge gaps.
  • Data and AI:
    • Develop tools, methodologies, and technologies with the support of data scientists to address specific underwriting challenges.
Your Profile
  • In-depth knowledge of P&C business operations, enabling a comprehensive understanding of insurance rationale, processes, profitability, and potential P&C risks.
  • Expertise in P&C actuarial fields to effectively manage proposed insurance metrics.
Technical Skills:
  • Approximately 8-10 years of underwriting experience in Retail Lines of Business.
  • General knowledge of Retail Lines insurance products and client segments.
  • Essential experience in project management.
  • Experience in complex environments.
  • Familiarity with programming, SAS, or other AI languages, along with Microsoft tools.
Soft Skills:
  • Natural leadership abilities.
  • Capable of developing structured arguments to effectively communicate ideas and persuade various stakeholders.
  • Adept at delivering high-level presentations to senior management or entity CEOs.
  • Agile in navigating the multifaceted P&C landscape (Local vs Group, Small vs Large entities, diverse underwriting cultures).
  • Customer-focused while promoting strong technical excellence in underwriting.
