Rennes, Bretagne, France INRIA Temps plein

Project Context

META-TOO is a European project that aims to investigate gender-based inappropriate social interactions in the Metaverse. The project is a collaboration between three institutions: Inria, NKUA, and IDIBAPS. Our team at Inria will focus on two main research topics: the impact of avatar and environment characteristics on the perception of inappropriate behavior in VR users, and the design and evaluation of interaction techniques to cope with such behavior.

Research Objectives

Our research will explore the following objectives:

  • Investigate the impact of avatar characteristics, such as realism of appearance and movement, animation, gender, ethnicity, attraction, etc., on the perception of inappropriate behavior in VR users.
  • Design and evaluate interaction techniques to enable users to initiate their response when they detect inappropriate behavior of others.

Methodology

We will use a mixed-methods approach, combining subjective responses, physiological measures, and behavioral responses of participants. Our research will also include perceptual evaluation, such as collecting subjective responses, physiological measures, and behavioral responses of participants.

Expected Outcomes

We expect to contribute to the creation of a more inclusive and equitable digital world by addressing the issue of online misconduct in virtual spaces. Our research will provide insights into the impact of avatar and environment characteristics on the perception of inappropriate behavior in VR users and design effective interaction techniques to cope with such behavior.

Requirements

The candidate must have a master's degree in a relevant field, such as mixed reality or human-computer interaction. The candidate should also have experience in 3D/VR/AR applications, evaluation methods, and controlled user studies. Good knowledge of programming languages, such as C# or C++, is also required. Good spoken and written English is essential, as well as good communication skills.

Benefits

The PhD position offers a monthly gross salary of 2100 euros for the first and second years and 2190 euros for the third year. The position also includes subsidized meals, partial reimbursement of public transport costs, and the possibility of teleworking and flexible organization of working hours.
