Innovative Scientist in Synthetic and Systems Biology

The Biofoundry and the Synthetic and Systems Biology Team. Lesaffre has pioneered the establishment of the first industrial Biofoundry in France, uniting a diverse group of ambitious scientists and engineers. This collaborative effort integrates biology, engineering, automation, and computer science to enhance the engineering, screening, and selection of microorganisms for various industrial biotechnology applications, such as baking, brewing, bioethanol production, flavors and fragrances, food and feed, nutraceuticals, and pharmaceuticals. In partnership with Recombia teams in the US and the Microbial Engineering team in France, the Biofoundry is a cornerstone of a robust Bioengineering ecosystem. The Synthetic and Systems Biology team (SSB) operates the Biofoundry alongside the High-Throughput Screening and Automation and Software Engineering teams, focusing on the design, construction, and analysis of Lesaffre organisms, genes, and genomes.
To expedite the creation of biosolutions for an expanding array of applications, it is essential to continuously broaden the scope, efficiency, and speed of our BUILD and NGS workflow portfolio. Central to our workflows is the capability to modify, amplify, assemble, and analyze DNA or RNA molecules in vitro, extract them from microbial cells, and introduce them into cells to alter their genomes.
We are in search of a highly driven scientist possessing 1) cutting-edge expertise in DNA and genome engineering and molecular biology, and 2) a strong enthusiasm for the development and optimization of bioengineering tools and technologies. The ideal candidate will either develop or integrate high-potential tools and technologies to enhance the effectiveness and utility of our BUILD and NGS workflow portfolio.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop genome engineering tools and technologies to enhance the scope, efficiency, and speed of our BUILD workflows (expand host organisms beyond S. cerevisiae and E. coli, improve efficiency of markerless DNA delivery to industrial strains, enable multi-locus and multi-gene delivery, etc.)
- Develop custom NGS tools and technologies inspired by state-of-the-art methodologies to enhance the scope, efficiency, and speed of our NGS workflows (custom indexing in library preparation for highly multiplexed DNA sequencing, methods for marker-assisted breeding, and support for protein engineering activities, etc.)
- Contribute to the ongoing BUILD and NGS activities of the team during peak demand periods by executing established, highly automated workflows on robotic workcells (maximum 15% of the time) and providing feedback for continuous workflow enhancement.
- Nurture a collaborative relationship with Recombia teams to promote collaboration focused on genome engineering technologies and associated NGS methodologies.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge in the field of microbial synthetic and systems biology as well as multiplex custom NGS methods by critically reviewing literature and participating in relevant conferences. Identify key technologies that have the potential to overcome existing bottlenecks in the development of high-performance engineered strains.
This role requires spending approximately 50% of the time in the laboratory. Data analysis can be conducted in collaboration with the Computational Biology & AI team, but proficiency in basic data analysis using Python or similar tools is essential.
Qualifications:
- PhD in microbiology, synthetic biology, systems biology, or molecular biology.
- Experience in custom NGS methods and microbial genome engineering.
- Ability to analyze data independently using custom scripts.
- Fluency in English.
- LIMS experience (such as Benchling or others) is a plus.
