**Description**:
**Design and Optimization of MEA Assemblies for CO₂ Electrolysis**

**Context**: The steep increase of carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere has driven the development of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage technologies (CCUS). Among these, the conversion of captured CO2 via electrocatalysis in value-added chemicals represents a promising alternative to simple storage. Using renewable electricity, CO₂ can be transformed into products such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and alcohols—helping reduce atmospheric concentrations while providing sustainable, CO₂-based chemicals to replace fossil-derived ones. Today, this conversion is typically carried out in “zero-gap” electrolizers where the anode, cathode and membrane are pressed together to minimize ohmic losses - forming what is known as Membrane-Electrode Assembly (MEA). The assembly of the electrolyzer - especially at higher scale - is a key factor for optimal performance. It strongly affects electrical resistance, ion transport, and gas/water distribution, which in turn influence the electrochemical reaction.
- As part of the Companies & Campus “BIO2ET” project, this internship will focus on optimizing the assembly of zero-gap electrolyzers ranging from 5 to 100 cm², as well as a multi-cell electrolyzer (stack). The intern will gain hands-on experience in electrochemistry, materials science, and renewable energy, while contributing to practical solutions for sustainable CO₂ utilization.

**Tasks**:

- Implementing different assembly methods—including hot pressing, bonding, and layer stratification—to fabricate MEAs of various sizes, ranging from 5 to 100 cm².
- Investigating the impact of assembly parameters (pressure, temperature, binder type, and layer thickness) on the mechanical and electrochemical properties of MEAs for CO₂ conversion.
- Characterizing the electrode interfaces using techniques such as microscopy, spectroscopy, and ionic conductivity measurements.
- Correlating MEA structure and properties with their performance in CO₂ electrolysis.
- Using the acquired data to define an optimized assembly protocol for a multi-cell electrolyzer (stack)

**Profil**:
**Who You Are**
- **Education**: You are pursuing a Master’s (MSc/M2) or final-year engineering student specializing in materials science, electrochemistry, or a related discipline.**:

- **Analytical Skills**: Basic proficiency in data analysis tools (Excel, Origin) — knowledge of Python or automation tools is a plus.
- **Technical Expertise**: Strong foundation in materials characterization (e.g., SEM, XRD, EDX) and/or electrochemical techniques (e.g., EIS, LSV, chronoamperometry).
- **Languages**: Fluency in English (spoken and written), French is a plus.
- **Mindset**: Motivated and hands-on, you’re eager to contribute to the development of sustainable technologies through rigorous experimental work.
