The Inria research centre in Lyon is the 9th Inria research centre, formally created in January 2022. It brings together approximately 320 people in 19 research teams and research support services.

Its staff are distributed in Villeurbanne, Lyon Gerland, and Saint-Etienne.

The Lyon centre is active in the fields of software, distributed and high-performance computing, embedded systems, quantum computing and privacy in the digital world, but also in digital health and computational biology.

Contexte et atouts du poste

Distributed applications are still mostly described in terms of processes or machines (virtual or not). Thus, the management of their life cycle is done at a low level of abstraction. This leads to a lack of optimization at best, as the management is done by the applications themselves, which often settle for simple solutions due to a lack of expertise. This lack of abstraction also makes it difficult to detect problems a priori and to remediate them automatically. The mechanisms for managing elasticity in Clouds are an example of how a higher level of abstraction (e.g. by providing rules for adding and/or removing virtual machines) simplifies the management of resources while optimizing their use.

New infrastructures, such as IoT-Edge-Cloud (computing continuum), make those issues even more complex as they increase the diversity and heterogeneity of resources (from small sensors to large data centers, from low power networks to core networks), to geographical distribution, as well as to increased dynamicity and security needs, all under performance, energy consumption, and regulatory constraints.

In order to meet these challenges, the Taranis project from the PEPR Cloud propose a strategy based on a significant abstraction of the application structure description in order to further automate the management of infrastructures and the applications they host. Thus, it will be possible to globally optimize the resources used with respect to multi-criteria objectives (price, deadline, performance, energy, etc.), both on the user side (applications) and the provider side (infrastructures). This approach also involves the challenges of abstracting the reconfiguration of applications in order to automatically adapt the use of resources.

Mission confiée

The proposed PhD aims to improve existing application description models with respect to variability. Existing models are often limited to description a concrete description of a particular deployment. This description has to be modified to accomodate for variations. Many models related to cloud computing support a form of cardinality management to let the system automatically select the right number of instances. However, conditions are often not limited such as for example deploying a proxy only when the number of server is strictly greater than one. The goal is to propose a model that supports as much as possible of application variablity such as for example to resources kinds and number, optimisation considerations. etc by enabling the description of various types of applications structures such as provided for example by HLCM [1]. However, a limitation of HLCM is that the model was not succesful in efficitently enabling the automatic generation of a placement problem from a given application description, set of resources, and optimization consideration for example.

This position is likely to be assigned to a restricted area (ZRR), as defined in decree no relating to the protection of the nation's scientific and technical potential (PPST). An unfavourable ministerial opinion for a post assigned to a ZRR would result in the recruitment being cancelled.
