NYU Paris is seeking a part-time lecturer in Architectural History to teach in a Master of Arts program in Historical and Sustainable Architecture.

Teaching takes place in Paris, from January 19th to April 15th; classes meet for approximately 4 hours per week; the instructor will also hold weekly office hours. The course is taught in English.

Adaptive Reuse of Buildings: Successes and Failures II

The overarching goal of this course is to see the ways architects and developers reuse older buildings today for modern purposes. This is the second half of a two-part course, that balances readings against case studies and visits. Two key theoretical issues are explored. The first is the role of memory in the significance of historic buildings. Can public memory withstand radical changes of use? Are some building types more likely to lose their burden of public memories more easily than others? The desired outcome is to develop an understanding of the many challenges of adaptive re-use, through the study of building types and their inherent physical and social characteristics.

The second issue is that of the relationship between the built environment and "heritage," using Paris as a case study. Visits illuminate these issues by practical example. By the end of the course students should have a broad understanding of the place of historic architecture in France today, based on a range of contrasting designs and building types.

NYU Paris recherche un professeur à temps partiel en Histoire de l'architecture pour enseigner dans le cadre d'un programme de niveau Master en Histoire de l'architecture et le développement durable.

L'enseignement a lieu à Paris, du 19 janvier au 15 avril ; les cours ont lieu pendant 4 heures une fois par semaine ; le professeur tiendra également des heures de bureau hebdomadaire. Le cours sera enseigné en anglais.

Réutilisation adaptative des bâtiments : réussites et échecs II

Deuxième partie d'un cours en deux volets, basé sur les lectures, les études de cas et les visites. Deux questions théoriques clés sont explorées. La première concerne le rôle de la mémoire dans l'importance des bâtiments historiques. La mémoire collective peut-elle résister à des changements radicaux d'utilisation ? Certains types de bâtiments sont-ils plus susceptibles que d'autres de perdre plus facilement le poids des souvenirs collectifs ? L'objectif est de développer une compréhension des nombreux défis liés à la réutilisation adaptative, à travers l'étude des types de bâtiments et de leurs caractéristiques physiques et sociales inhérentes.

La deuxième question est celle de la relation entre le modernisme et le « patrimoine », en prenant Paris comme étude de cas. Les visites illustrent ces questions par des exemples concrets. À la fin du cours, les étudiants devraient avoir une compréhension globale de la place de l'architecture moderne en France aujourd'hui, sur la base d'une série de conceptions et de types de bâtiments contrastés.
