Research Internship – Fluid Mechanics and Rheology in Extrusion-Based Bioprinting

3d.FAB is the only French "Plateforme Technologique Innovante" dedicated to academic and private healthcare innovation through 3D printing. We have two main areas of expertise:
For biochemistry, especially diagnosis with prototyping 3D lab-on-chip, novel materials for 3D medical devices, biocompatible polymers and cell-size 3D printing.
For regenerative medicine through dedicated living cells and tissues bioprinters.
Proposed Activities
The intern will contribute to the scientific and numerical development of FlowTips, a predictive tool dedicated to assessing the impact of flow conditions in extrusion-based bioprinting on the physiological state of cells.
The main activities will include:
- Targeted literature review on fluid mechanics applied to bioinks and hydrogels, with a focus on yield-stress fluids (e.g. Herschel–Bulkley models) in Poiseuille-type flow configurations.
- Modelling of hydrogel flows under bioprinting conditions (velocity profiles, shear stresses, strain rate gradients) and implementation or enhancement of existing models within the MATLAB environment.
- Integration of advanced rheological laws derived from experimental data to improve the predictive accuracy of the FlowTips tool.
- Establishment of quantitative correlations between hydrodynamic parameters (shear stress, residence time, dissipated energy) and cellular physiological indicators (cell viability, mechanically induced stress).
- Validation of model predictions through comparison with experimental datasets available within the 3d.FAB platform.
- Contribution to scientific dissemination of the results (technical reports and support for the preparation of a scientific publication).
The internship is embedded in a long-term research framework and may lead to a PhD project within the EDISS doctoral school.
Expected Skills and Background
- Master's level (MSc) or equivalent training in fluid mechanics, process engineering, biomechanics, physics, or biomedical engineering.
- Strong fundamentals in fluid mechanics and rheology of complex fluids (hydrogels, non-Newtonian fluids).
- Proficiency in scientific programming using MATLAB (numerical modelling, data processing).
- Strong interest in bioprinting, biomaterials, and process–cell interactions.
- Ability to critically analyse scientific literature and synthesize results.
- Autonomy, scientific rigour, and ability to work within a multidisciplinary research environment.
- Background knowledge in cell biology or bioprocessing will be considered an asset, but is not mandatory.
