WHO WE ARE ?

“The only solution to loneliness is human connection” (Timeleft)

Timeleft is a dynamic startup focused on improving social interactions between people living in big cities. Our platform brings people together in small groups to share memorable dining experiences, fostering connections and friendships.

As we grow rapidly and prepare to launch 100+ cities in the rest of 2024, we are looking for a talented Senior Data engineer to lead the development of our back end technology.

You will be responsible for building ‘from scratch’ a suite of back-end APIs and database architecture to support our growth and feature development.

ROLE OVERVIEW

At Timeleft, you will take the lead in designing and implementing a robust data strategy and architecture, supervising the ingestion, treatment, and use of our data for use by our people and tools. You'll have the unique opportunity to shape the future of our platform by helping us migrate to an entirely new database structure, laying the foundation of a successful data strategy..

We want to share with you our short term challenges you’ll be taking on at our side:

Implement a data architecture to understand and plan the flow of data from third-party platforms, our product database, and our analytics tools towards a flexible data lake/warehouse solution allow for easy reporting and analysis by Data Analysts, Data Scientists.

Supervise a data 'plumbing' engineer to implement and/or refine data pipelines to accomplish these data ETL/flows.

Design database schemas to support easy and flexible use of our internal data.

Design and implement monitoring and alerting tools to ensure the integrity and reliability of these data pipelines.

Connect disparate platforms (Apple App Store, Google Play store, Stripe, Firebase, Braze CRM, etc.) together to ensure 360° visibility for analytics.

ARE YOU RIGHT FOR THIS JOB?

If you have:

  • Bachelor's, Master's degree in relevant fields (Computer Science, Data Science, etc.), with a PhD being a plus.
  • 5+ years of experience as an individual contributor
  • Experience designing data architecture and discussing data strategies for data-driven B2C software products.
  • Expertise with most of the technologies in our stack: Node.js, Python, React, Google Cloud Platform, Firebase, Supabase, Postgres, BigQuery
  • Proven history of architecting successful, scalable, reliable data pipelines
  • Excellent written communication skills in English, verbal fluency in English and/or French, facilitating collaboration across diverse teams.
  • Comfortable in an adaptable role within a startup environment.
  • Familiarity with communication tools like Notion or Slack.
  • Familiarity with project management and software tools like GitHub, Asana, etc.

Soft skills we seek:

  • You’re a self-starter, you’re known for pushing projects and features forward and don’t need or want micromanagement.
  • You devour documentation to build first-class, future-ready, feature-complete integrations between platforms.
  • Have a ‘boomerang’ attitude - you’re given a responsibility, next thing you know, it’s done and you’re back for more.
  • [Bonus] Are multi-cultural, speak more than one language, and understand how to make a great dinner party :)

Hard skills:

  • You can cite quantitative and qualitative consequences of bad data design, and cite specific, tactical tools and techniques you have used to identify and resolve problems.
  • You have implemented unit, component, and/or integration level tests in a production environment with CI/CD.
  • You can ELI5: data architecture do’s and don’ts,
  • Queuing, batching, and retry strategies,
  • relational vs. non-relational database technologies and associated factors: data models, performance considerations, and query design.
  • Human factors design, and/or things like the NNG’s 10 laws of UX
  • Able to organize and run workshops to align data definitions between stakeholders within a company
  • SOLID principles, graceful degradation, loose coupling, inheritance, extensibility, and more
  • Sharing a stack you chose for a project, and why it was the right choice.

You can teach us something we don’t know about one or more of the following:

  • Google Cloud (Firebase, Cloud Functions, Batch jobs, BigQuery, Supabase, Postgres)
  • Docker (private registries, custom container builds, compose)
  • Data Pipelines (BigQuery, slice-and-dice data exploration tools, Snowflake, Tableau, PowerBI, etc.)
  • Product analytics and metrics (ClickHouse, Grafana, PostHog, etc.)
  • Developer tooling (Sentry, Slack Apps/webhooks, PagerDuty, etc.)
  • Testing and QA: What makes a good test, and at what layer should you test each part of the pipeline?

You care about being part of a fast, smart, lean team and want responsibility and freedom to make great decisions and follow through on your ideas.

You want to be respected, appreciated, and nurtured on a team of like-minded people.

Bonus points for:

  • Having a beastly StackOverflow profile
  • Contributing to open source software
  • Having side projects you'd like to share
  • Demonstrating high skill-level with understanding data types, ORM, graph and vector databases

Competitive remuneration and flexible office hours.

Be part of the Paris team, where the entire management team is based.

The opportunity to develop your position and responsibilities as Timeleft grows.

Take part in Timeleft dinners and see for yourself the impact we have on people's lives.

Help fight the loneliness epidemic in big cities.

Our ‘tech’ values:

One source of truth: Whether it’s a variable, a decision, a spec or a data model, you want to be part of a team where both people and code have a single source of truth.

Build it beautiful, not ornate: You write code and documentation like it’s a love letter to the next person who comes across it… but you also understand that simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication.

Ship it right: The operative words are ‘ship it’ AND ‘right’. You know how to test, you know how to roll out a new feature, we know how to roll back if there’s an issue, and we know how to measure success.

Graceful degradation: You understand how to build software that handles errors gracefully, and provides opportunities for self-healing, retry conditions and/or exponential back-off, helpful error messages, alternative paths to success for the user, and helpful debug information.

Debate the idea, not the person: Good and bad ideas can come from anywhere - we aggressively debate the merits of an idea without engaging any interpersonal conflict. We all want the best outcome for the product, period.

Our ‘human’ values:

  • Humans after all: We hold ourselves to the highest level of professional conduct:
  • Accountability: Holding each other accountable is a sign of trust and respect, not criticism or doubt.
  • Shared wins, shared failures: We celebrate individual successes, as a team success is made of many individual moments of glory… however it is a team effort that makes the incredible possible.
  • We consider all failures to be a team failure; it’s just a question of when (hiring, onboarding, training, documentation, scoping, testing, or communication)
  • Generosity: We are generous with our praise, with our time, and with our skill.
  • We assume best intentions from others, and we are careful to ensure our own intentions are aligned.
  • Communication: We understand the value of asynchronous work, and the additional responsibility and skill it entails in communicating, problem-solving, and documenting things.
  • We value synchronous time and work, but we know how to choose the right tool and channel for the job.
  • Assertiveness is key: If you see something, say something. Friction is an invitation to greatness.
  • Growth: We are constantly seeking new and improved ways of working on the product.
  • We are constantly seeking new ways of growing as humans and professionals.

PERKS AND BENEFITS

Competitive salary based on skillset and experience - we are looking to hire a small, highly skilled team. If you're worth two developers, you can have their pay :)

Exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of technology-driven social innovation.

Collaborative and inclusive work environment that values diverse perspectives.

Opportunity to contribute to company expansion and growth into new markets.

Your Timeleft dinners are expensed :)

WHEN CAN I START ?

We are looking for someone who can start yesterday :)
