Position Overview

The Atlantis project-team, a collaborative initiative between Inria and the Jean-Alexandre Dieudonné Mathematics Laboratory at Université Côte d'Azur, is at the forefront of applied mathematics and computational science. Our team is dedicated to pioneering research focused on the design, analysis, and implementation of innovative numerical methodologies for partial differential equations (PDEs) that model interactions at the nanoscale between light and matter. A key component of our research is the development of the DIOGENeS software suite, which incorporates various Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods specifically designed for time- and frequency-domain Maxwell equations, potentially coupled with differential equations that characterize the behavior of optical propagation media.

Research Objectives

Metasurfaces, which are two-dimensional structures, exhibit extraordinary capabilities for manipulating light in ways that surpass traditional optical components. These surfaces have sparked considerable interest in research, leading to the creation of advanced devices such as achromatic metalenses, color holograms, and metasurfaces with dynamic functionalities. While initially investigated for classical optical applications, recent advancements have revealed their significant potential in the realm of quantum technology. Unlike classical optics, which treats light as a wave, quantum applications focus on the manipulation of individual photons for tasks related to quantum information processing.

Classical electromagnetic simulations, grounded in traditional physics, provide insights into how metasurfaces respond to incoming light, including aspects such as polarization and amplitude. However, these simulations fall short when dealing with single-photon interactions, as classical physics assumes a continuous energy distribution, whereas quantum mechanics describes energy in discrete packets known as photons. Thus, classical simulations cannot adequately represent the quantum mechanical interactions between a single photon and a metasurface.

Key Responsibilities

In this postdoctoral role, the primary goal will be to establish and refine modeling tools to investigate the interaction between single photons and metasurfaces. We will build upon and enhance the high-order DGTD method previously introduced. Additionally, the project will involve applying these numerical tools to design configurations for quantum information processing utilizing metasurfaces. This position will be situated within the Atlantis project-team at Inria, fostering close collaboration with our physics partners to address theoretical modeling challenges, interpret simulation results, and explore potential applications.

Required Qualifications

Candidates should possess a Ph.D. in Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, Scientific Computing, or Electrical Engineering. The following skills and knowledge are essential:

  • Proficiency in computational electromagnetics, finite element methods for PDEs, and numerical optimization techniques.
  • Strong understanding of quantum optics, nanophotonics, metasurfaces, and metamaterials.
  • Software development experience in Python and Fortran 2003, along with parallel programming skills using MPI and OpenMP.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including teamwork, effective communication, and commitment to collaborative research.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is highly valued.

Benefits

  • Subsidized meals.
  • Partial reimbursement for public transportation costs.
  • Generous leave policy: 7 weeks of annual leave plus 10 additional days off due to statutory reductions in working hours, with options for exceptional leave.
  • Flexibility for teleworking after a designated period and adaptable working hours.
  • Access to professional equipment, including videoconferencing and computer resources.
  • Opportunities for social, cultural, and sports activities.
  • Access to vocational training programs.
  • Comprehensive social security coverage.

Compensation

The gross monthly salary for this position is €2746.
