This research initiative, supported financially by the National Research Agency, is part of the ANR RECLASSIF 2024 project, established in collaboration with the national network of engineering schools of the Institut Mines-Télécom and the Ecole Nationale des Arts et Métiers.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

According to ADEME, waste heat emissions in the industrial sector in France account for approximately 51 TWh, representing 16% of the fuel consumption in this sector. The distribution analysis reveals that 10% of this lost energy is found in high-temperature ranges (>400°C), 37% in medium temperatures (200°C to 400°C), and 53% in low temperatures (100°C to 200°C). While several studies have focused on high-temperature recovery systems, medium and low-temperature emissions are more dispersed, particularly in the Hauts-de-France region, complicating the development of innovative recovery technologies.

OBJECTIVES:

This project aims to create adaptable latent thermal storage solutions for waste heat recovery, enhancing energy efficiency across various industrial energy systems. The primary goal is to minimize or replace fossil fuel usage in applications such as heating and hot water production in residential and industrial sectors, including the agri-food industry and district heating networks. The project focuses on capturing and storing waste energy in optimized latent thermal storage units, designed for flexibility across diverse applications, ultimately contributing to a sustainable and efficient industrial future.

One promising avenue for thermal recovery involves developing latent thermal storage modules utilizing phase change materials (PCMs), emphasizing eco-efficient materials. The innovative aspect of this project lies in employing passive techniques to improve heat transfer within the PCM and the heat transfer fluid, resulting in compact and optimized modules that facilitate efficient thermal energy charging and discharging.

ACTIVITIES:

The complexity of the phenomena involved in the development of these storage units necessitates the creation of detailed numerical prediction models (CFD) for melting and solidification processes, incorporating both natural and mixed convective heat exchanges. These models will undergo rigorous validation through experimental testing at both local and global scales. A dual approach combining numerical simulations and experimental validation will be employed throughout the project.

The developed storage modules will encompass various coupled physical phenomena, including single-phase conduction and convection, as well as phase change processes. Detailed modeling of these heat transfer modes will be conducted using CFD tools to accurately capture local transfer mechanisms.

Thermo-fluidic experiments will be established to validate numerical models and assess the performance of selected phase change materials (PCM), employing advanced quantitative techniques such as particle image velocimetry (PIV) to analyze velocity fields in both natural and forced convection scenarios.

The integration of numerical tools with experimental data will facilitate the prototyping and development of flexible and durable waste heat recovery modules, specifically targeting temperature ranges of 70°C to 180°C.

CANDIDATE PROFILE:

The position is suitable for candidates holding or pursuing a Master's degree or Engineering diploma with expertise in one or more of the following areas: Fluid Mechanics, Energy Systems, Thermal Engineering.

Essential skills for the successful execution of this research project include:
  • Numerical modeling and thermo-fluidic simulation
  • Thermo-fluidic experimentation through local and global approaches
  • Scientific rigor and strong writing skills
  • Proficiency in English for dissemination of research findings (publications, scientific communications)
Familiarity with software such as Star CCM+, ANSYS-FLUENT, or equivalents will be advantageous.
