This International PhD thesis represents a collaborative effort between IMT Nord Europe and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology.

The successful candidate will become part of the Energy, Fluids, Transfers (EFT) team within CERI Energy Environment. This team's research is centered on the complex optimization of thermo-fluidic energy systems, with applications in high-efficiency heat exchangers, electric vehicle battery cooling, and advanced solar technologies.

LIST is a mission-driven Research and Technology Organization (RTO) focused on developing competitive prototypes for various stakeholders. With a workforce comprising 75% researchers, LIST engages in fundamental and applied research across the innovation spectrum.
The Materials Research and Technology (MRT) department at LIST, with its team of 200 experts, is pivotal in advancing technologies that support local and international industries, focusing on nanomaterials, scientific instrumentation, and functional polymers.
The candidate will join the Ferroic Materials for Transducers group, specializing in electroactive materials, particularly in the areas of electrocaloric cooling and pyroelectric thermal energy harvesting.
Scientific Context:
LIST researchers have made significant strides in developing pyroelectric materials that generate electrical energy from thermal variations. Their recent publication in a prestigious journal highlights groundbreaking advancements in energy production capabilities.
The EFT team has also been engaged in enhancing the efficiency of Photovoltaic Thermal (PVT) solar panels, which produce both electricity and heat. Current practices often lead to substantial heat loss during warmer months.
This collaboration aims to innovate by integrating a pyroelectric component into a PVT solar system, enabling the capture of previously wasted thermal energy and establishing a novel renewable energy generation framework.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct a comprehensive literature review on PVT systems and pyroelectric materials.
- Design integration configurations for the pyroelectric component within the PVT system.
- Perform static energy analysis to identify optimal integration concepts and preliminary sizing.
- Characterize the thermal and electrical properties of the selected pyroelectric material.
- Assist in developing a test bench and laboratory prototype, conducting experimental studies on integration.
- Model and simulate thermo-fluid exchanges using advanced software, optimizing integration designs.
- Modify existing test setups to validate new configurations and compare numerical with experimental results.
- Present findings at international conferences and publish in reputable scientific journals.
- Engage in teaching activities, including tutorials and practical sessions.
Candidate Profile:
Applicants should possess an engineering degree or a Master's degree with a strong emphasis on energy, thermodynamics, or materials science. Proficiency in modeling software (e.g., Fluent, StarCCM+, Comsol) is advantageous.
